EMERALD
A stone that enchants with vivid green reminiscent of the deep clear waters of the South Seas. It can have any of a large number of different shades of green, all delightful to the eye, depending on its place of origin. The emeralds that come from Colombia are said to particularly suit Japanese wearers.

RUBY
A stone whose very name evokes the warmth and intensity of the midsummer sun. It is designated as the birthstone for the midsummer month of July, and is one of the two "core" colored stones (the other being emerald). Rubies of 2 carats and over have decreased dramatically in quantity and now have high rarity value; if such stones are also of high quality their price will be high indeed.

SAPPHIRE
A gem composed of corundum, the same mineral that rubies are composed of. In fact, "ruby" refers to corundum gemstones of the color red, while those of all other colors are called "sapphires." The sapphires we see most often are blue, but they occur in a wide variety of other colors, such as pink, yellow, and green.

ALEXANDRITE

Alexandrite is possessed of a dual character. In daylight it shines green, but at night its rays turn red under electric lamplight. Though smaller than other gemstones, it has high rarity that makes it one of the more expensive jewels.

CAT'S-EYE
When a spotlight is shone at it, this stone emits from its top a beam of light just like the shining of a cat's eye. Its formal name is "chrysoberyl cat's-eye" chrysoberyl is the same mineral that alexandrite is composed of, and there is an extremely rare and valuable variety of this stone called "alexandrite cat's-eye."

AQUAMARINE

Viewing this stone gives the same sense of revivifying freshness and purity as the sight of a perfectly clear sea. It is actually composed of the same mineral (beryl) as emerald, and its name, formed from "aqua" (water) plus "marine" (sea) reminds us that since ancient times, it has been prized as a charm for protecting people traveling by sea.

GARNET
Highly popular as a birthstone for the month of January, garnet is a particularly appealing gem that is generally thought of as red but can be of virtually any hue (with the exception of blue). Some garnets of the green variety are comparable to emeralds in beauty.
